Jhanas
A very powerful and deep meditative state
Amitabha and the Pure Land
A Buddha meaning immortal light who hears prayers of the faithful and grants them rebirth to the pure land after their death. Pure land= A heaven in another world. It is in another world because it is believed that it is too difficult to attain enlightenment or Nirvana while living on this earth.
Kalachakra initiation
Means the wheel of turning. Requires construction of a sacred sand mandala and a host of complex rituals.
Mahasiddhas
Means great perfection or one who has attained the great perfection of Nirvana.
Six yogas of Naropa
It is tantric yoga. Internal unions between male and female energies. They include the generation of internal heat and the mastery of the dream state as well as sexual practices grounded in the yogic techniques.
Jiriki vs Tariki
Jiriki= Self- power. Tariki= Other-power Debate over if one had to attain enlightenment solely through one’s own efforts or if it requires the power or grace of another.
Mindfulness and compassion training
One of the areas where Nirvana has firmly taken root is in the medical world. The Center for Mindfulness and Compassion, an alliance between Cambridge and Harvard, is one of many major universities that is grounded in the study of Buddhist meditation and compassion practices.
