(20 cards)
Why did van der waal make correction to the volume and pressure in the ideal gas equation
individual gas molecules have a volume and intermolecular forces act between molecules which slows them down
Why do isotherms from van der waals equation deviate from obtained values at low temperatures?
Below critical temperatures real gasses liquefy at high pressures, this behaviour is not taken into account in the equation
What is the ideal gas equation?
pv=nrt
How do you convert temp c to k
+273
How do you go from kpa to pa?
X 1000
How do you go from dm3 to m3
/1000
At constant pressure volume is proportional to what?
Temperature
When temperature is kept constant the volume is inversely proportional to what?
pressure
gasses are in a state of…
Constant motion and the pressure is due to collisions against the walls of the container in the collisions the total energy doesnt change
if yoy had two types of gasses in a container then pressure will be equal to?
Ptotal= Pa+Pb
How much space at room temperature does 1 mol of gas take up?
24dm3
How much space at stp (20C and 1atm) does 1 mol of gas take up?
22.4dm3
Equation for pressure volume and temp?
P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
1 atm into Pa?
101325
litre into m3?
divide by 1000
p=1/3 NMV2 can be used to calculate pressure of an ideal gas
True
What was Zartmans experiment with bismuth and the rotating drum for?
To study the distribution of speeds of bismuth atoms
Why would ammonia show great deviations from ideal gas behaviour?
Because of hydrogen bonds
Grahams rate law?
Ra/ Rb = square root* Molar massb/Molar mass a
How do you work out rate?
moles divided by speed
