Unit 7 Flashcards
(19 cards)
Why is KMnO4 a good oxidising agent?
It is able to accept electrons oxidising the species donating the electrons, itself is reduced
How is iron made?
Reduction of haematite with carbon and carbon monoxide in a blast furnace
When is Iron(3) Chloride and bromide is formed when?
As an intermediate during the chlorination or bromination of benzene in the presence of iron powder
Can iron 2 chloride be made from chlorine and iron directly?
No
Can iron 3 chloride be made from chlorine and iron directly?
Yes
The addition of thiocyanate ions to a solution of what will give a blood red colour?
Fe3+ (iron 3)
How would you synthesise pentan-2, 3-diol?
Pent-2-ene + potassium manganate
What is a good test for iron 2 and iron 3?
Addition of sodium hydroxide will give green for iron2 and brown for iron3
Why is zinc oxide amphoteric?
It can act as an acid and a base
Are group 2B sulphates soluble?
Yes
What happens to group 2B sulphates in solution?
They free up the metal ions
Can some group 2B crystals be hydrated?
Yes
Are all solutions of group 2B sulphates alkaline?
No
In solution do group 2B sulphates free up metals?
No they free up metal ions
What do nitrates of 2B decompose to?
Nitrates of zinc and cadium decompose to give NO2 O2 and the metal oxide
Nitrate of mercury decomposes to NO2 O2 and the metal
What test is used to determine whether a blood sample is human?
Precipitin
what property of group 2B sulphides is useful in their analysis?
Theyre insoluble in water and have distinct colours by adding hydrogen sulphide
Are group 2B sulphides insoluble?
Yes
If hydrogen sulphide is added to a solution of group 2B ions what will happen to their sulfides?
They will precipitate
