Unit 6 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Why are bonds in SF6 shorter and stronger then expected?
Sulphur uses d orbitals in bonding it gives the bonds a degree of double bond nature
Melting points of group 6 hydrides?
o hydride is really high then down the up steadily
What is phosphoric acid?
Dibasic
What is peroxide in alkaline solution?
Reducing agent
what does thiosulphate have the same structure as ?
The sulphate ion with one oxygen replaced with sulphur
Sulfuric acid is a strong acid and can be used as a….
Dehydrating agent
What is less thermally stable, Arsine or ammonia?
Arsine
Why can phosphourous exist as P4 and not P2 dimers?
The P-P triple bond is not as strong as the P-P single bond
All group 5 trihalides and pentahalides apart from nitrogen, why?
Nitrogen cant use d orbitals in its bonding
Is ammonia soluble in water?
Yes but its solution is a really weak alkali
What is oxidation and reduction in terms of oxygen?
Reduction- lose oxygen
Oxidation- Gain oxygen
Is ammonia a powerful oxidising agent?
No its a reducing agent
What can ozone be used for?
Oxidising an alkene into an aldehyde or ketone
What are the bonds in ozone like?
They show double and single characteristics
Product of sulphuric acid and propanol?
Propene
Melting points of group 6 elements?
/\
What acid would you use in the synthesis of hydrogen bromide?
Phosphoric acid
