Unit 4 Part 1 And 2 Flashcards
(41 cards)
What is heritability?
The proportion of observed variation in a trait among individuals that can be attributed to genetic differences.
Can you say an individual’s trait is X% inherited?
No, heritability applies to populations, not individuals.
What traits have a heritability of around 0.4–0.6?
Extraversion and neuroticism.
What is the heritability of activity level?
Approximately 0.50.
What is the heritability of shyness?
Around 0.44.
What is the heritability estimate for the propensity to marry?
68%.
What is shared environment?
Environmental influences that make siblings more alike (e.g., parental values, home conditions).
What is non-shared environment?
Influences unique to each individual (e.g., different peer groups).
What is genotype–environment interaction?
When individuals with different genotypes respond differently to the same environment.
What is genotype–environment correlation?
When individuals with certain genotypes are more likely to be exposed to particular environments.
What is the DRD4 gene associated with?
Novelty seeking and risky behavior.
What neurotransmitter does DRD4 influence?
Dopamine.
What does the 5-HTT gene influence?
Susceptibility to depression after stressful life events.
What does electrodermal activity measure?
Skin conductance related to sympathetic nervous system activity.
What physiological states increase electrodermal activity?
Anxiety, fear, startle response, guilt.
What cardiovascular measures are used in personality research?
Blood pressure and heart rate (BPM).
What can an increased heart rate indicate?
Anxiety, fear, or cognitive effort.
What does EEG measure?
Brain’s electrical activity.
What brain imaging tools are used in personality research?
PET and fMRI.
Which brain region correlates with extraversion?
Medial orbitofrontal cortex.
Which neurotransmitter is associated with novelty seeking?
Dopamine.
What is the role of serotonin in personality?
Associated with emotional stability and regulation.
What is the function of norepinephrine?
Activates the fight-or-flight response.
What does Eysenck’s ARAS theory propose?
Introverts have higher baseline cortical arousal than extraverts.
