Unit 7 - definitions Flashcards
(22 cards)
Genotype
the genetic composition of an organism
Phenotype
-expression of genetic constitution of an genotype
-it’s interaction with the environment
Locus
the location of a gene on a chromosome
Diploid
a cell in which the nucleus contains two sets of chromosomes
Haploid
a cell that contains only a single copy of each chromosome
Heterozygous
when the alleles for a gene are different
Homozygous
when the alleles for a gene are the same
Gene pool
all the alleles in a population
Species
organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
Population
a group of the same species in the same area
Community
populations of different species in the same area
Ecosystem
the community and the non living aspects of an environment
Habitat
a small part of an ecosystem where a population lives
Niche
-the role of a species within it’s community
-includes food resources
-no two species can occupy identical niches
Carrying Capacity
the population size of species that an ecosystem
Intraspecific Competition
within a species
Interspecific Competition
between different species
Autosomal linkage
the two genes are on the same chromosome
Epistasis
interaction of one gene that affects the expression of another gene
Co-dominant
both alleles are expressed in the phenotype
recessive allele
an allele that is only expressed in the phenotype when there is another identical allele
dominant allele
an allele that is always expressed in the phenotype of an organism
