When you want to tell for whom something is or to whom something is directed, you use an indirect object. This is the same in Spanish and English. Let’s take a look.
I tell Teresa the truth. →
Le digo la verdad a Teresa.
I tell Teresa the truth. → Le digo la verdad a Teresa. Explantation
In the sentences, Teresa is the indirect object because I tell the truth to Teresa. We have to add the le to indicate that the truth is being told to Teresa. Adding the phrase a Teresa is optional. It clarifies and emphasizes who is receiving the action. In this case, Teresa is being told the truth. It is just as correct to to use Le digo la verdad.
Our parents tell the news to us. →
Nuestros padres nos dicen las noticias (a nosotros).
I tell him my name. →
Le digo mi nombre (a él).
She tells me the truth.
Me dice la verdad a mí.
Pedro tells you that he is hungry.
Te dice Pedro que tiene hambre a ti.
