Q

1.

Why is México one of the most active places on earth for volcanic activity and earthquakes?

A

This is because México is almost entirely located on top of three of the Earth’s tectonic plates, and when these plates shift, there are earthquakes.

Q

What causes earthqaukes

A

The three plates, the Cocos plate, the Pacific Plate, and the North American plate, move and shift against each other, and the activity at these fault lines causes many earthquakes as well as volcanoes to become active.

Q

Pacific Ring of Fire

A

That area is historically and globally known for having many earthquakes and active volcanoes, which occur because the Ring of Fire lies along the border of the Pacific plate. This is the same reason that the coastal state of California has more earthquakes than Minnesota, which is in the middle of Los Estados Unidos. If we extend the Ring of Fire a little farther south of California, we’ll hit México

Q

One earthquake in México took place in 1985 and measured 8.1 out of 10 on the Richter scale near Acapulco.

A

In that earthquake, thousands of people lost their lives in México City. It was discovered that the city is built on an ancient lakebed where the earth is not stable, and this factor only increases the intensity of seismic activity during an earthquake.

Q

How was Los Topos founded

A

Los Topos was formed by people within the community after the 1985 earthquake in México to help locate and recover victims of the earthquake who were trapped in rubble and debris. Los Topos volunteers helped sift through the debris and wreckage to locate earthquake victims. They were given the name Los Topos, which means “The Moles,” and they soon came to use that name officially.

Q

Los Topos

A

Los Topos is a volunteer organization; people give their time, and sometimes lives, to help those in need of rescue efforts. Los Topos has been called upon all over the world to help in such catastrophic events as Hurricane Katrina in Los Estados Unidos in 2005, the tsunami in Japan in 2011, and the earthquake in Haiti in 2010. People who volunteer for los Topos all have regular jobs, and they take leave from their jobs to aid in a disaster. They are able to train because of private donations, given to aid in the cause of relief. What would we do without such generosity of the local people, volunteers, and those faraway still helping in any way they can?
