Unit Five - Weathering and Erosion - Weathering Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is weathering?
The breakdown of rock at or near the Earth’s surface.
What are sediments?
Rock Fragments
What are the three causes of the weathering of rocks?
- Air
- Water
- Actions of Living Things
What is Chemical Weathering (2)?
- The breakdown of rock
- Change in mineral or chemical composition
When does chemical weathering increase? Why?
Warm & Moist Climates
Causes more rainfall, speeding up the chemical reactions between rainwater and rock
What is Oxidation? (3)
- Type of Chemical Weathering
- The rusting of a material
- Interaction of iron and oxygen.
What type of weathering is oxidation (3)?
- Chemical weathering
- Rock rusts because the iron in the material is exposed to oxygen
- The composition changes to iron oxide.
How does water affect a rock? (4)
- Water+ Carbon Dioxide = Carbonic Acid (dissolves any rock especially limestone)
- Frost Action
- Can weather, smooth, erode, and deposit rock through a running river
- Water itself can dissolve anything
Water is sometime called the universal solvent because given enough time, it can dissolve anything.
What is a sinkhole (3)?
- A natrual depression in land.
- Collapse of a cavern roof
- This happens because water dissolves the solid particles
Cavern roof means the top of a cave
What is Physical Weathering?
The breakdown of rock into smaller pieces without chemical change.
What is Abrasion
Rock particles grind against each other
Sandpaper, Nailfile
What is a charactersistic of abrasion and what are the four causes?
Smooth & Rounded
- Ice
- Running water
- Gravity
- Air
What is Frost Action (5)?
- Physical Weathering
- Water infiltrates cracks in the bedrock
- Freezes
- Expands 10%
- The rock splits apart.
Definition of Infiltration
Water enters a substance.
What is plant root growth?
A plant grows inside the cracks of a rock
Spreads the cracks
Abrupt Temperature Changes (3)
- Temperature Increases
- Rock Expands
- Rock Fractures
What are the four examples of physical weathering?
- Frost Action
- Abrasion
- Plant Root Growth
- Abrupt Temperature Changes
