Unit Four - Types of Volcanoes Flashcards
What are the three types of Volcanoes?
- Composite (stratovolcanoes)
- Shield Volcanoes
- Cinder Cone Volcanoes
What are Composite (Strato) Volcanoes formed from?
They are formed from alternating layers of lava and rock fragments
Mt St. Helens, Mt Rainier, Vesuvius
How do Composite (Strato) Volcanoes erupt? Why?
They erupt in an explosive way because the viscous magma creates a lot of pressure.
Mt St. Helens, Mt Rainier, Vesuvius
Where are Composite Stratovolcanoes located?
They are located at a convergent boundary (oceanic and continental collision).
Mt St. Helens, Mt Rainier, Vesuvius
How do Shield Volcanoes erupt?
Where erupt from, type of lava , size of mount, how and why it flows,
The BASALTIC lava slowly oozes out of the LARGE mountain, since the BASALTIC lava is runny. This BASALTIC lava flows from a vent or several vents.
Hawaii (Kilauea)
Where are Shield Volcanoes located?
Found at hotspots or divergent boundaries (mid ocean ridge)
Hawaii (Kilauea)
Where are Cinder Cone Volcanoes located?
Can grow very rapidly
Ex: Paricutin (in Mexico, grew 300 ft in 5 days)
Cinder Cone Volcanoes are usually located above vents of strato or shield volcanoes.
Can grow very rapidly
Ex: Paricutin (in Mexico, grew 300 ft in 5 days)
What are Cinder Cone Volcanoes made of?
Cinder Cone Volcanoes are built from lava fragments called cinders
Can grow very rapidly
Ex: Paricutin (in Mexico, grew 300 ft in 5 days)
All about Hot Spots
A hot spot is a fixed area of high temperatures within the mantle. It burns through the plate that is located above it.
