Briefly describe the drug regime in a medical abortion undertaken at 6 weeks gestation.

1. Mifepristone orally
2. 24 - 48 hours later misoprostal taken orally

How does mifepristone work?

Progesterone inhibitor causes the pregnancy to detach from the uterus.

How does misoprostol work?

It is a prostoglandin which binds to myometrial cells causing myometrial contraction and expulsion of tissue.

Briefly describe the drug regime in a medical abortion undertaken at 12 weeks gestation.

1. Mifeprsitone orally
2. Between 36 - 48 hours later misoprastol vaginally.
These women would be in hospital for this surgery and a maximum of four further doses can be given at 3 hour intervals.
