origin: skull, nuchal ligament and spinous processes fo C7-T12
insertion: clavicle, acromion and scapula spine
innervation: motor - accessory nerve, proprioceptive - C3, C4
blood supply: cervicodorsal trunk
actions:
- upper fibres - elevate scapula and rotate it during arm abduction
- middle fibres: retract scapula
- lower fibres: pull scapula inferiorly
