What is urbanisation?
Urbanisation is the growth in the proportion of a country’s population living in urban areas.
What percentage of the world’s population currently lives in urban areas?
More than 50% of the world’s population currently live in urban areas (3.9 billion people) and this is increasing every day.
How does urban growth differ between advanced countries and low-income developing countries?
Advanced countries (ACs) have very slow rates of urban growth, while low-income developing countries (LIDCs) are experiencing the fastest rates of urbanisation.
What are advanced countries (ACs)?
ACs are more economically developed countries, e.g. UK, Japan, and Germany.
What are low-income developing countries (LIDCs)?
LIDCs are less economically developed countries, e.g. Ethiopia, Nepal, and Afghanistan.
What is a megacity?
A megacity is an urban area with over 10 million people living there.
How many megacities were there in 1950?
In 1950, there were only 2 megacities - Tokyo and New York.
How many megacities are predicted by 2030?
It is predicted that the number of megacities will rise to 41 by 2030.
Where are most current megacities located?
More than two-thirds of current megacities are in poorer countries (EDCs and LIDCs), mostly in Asia.
What defines a world city?
A world city is a city that has an influence over the whole world, acting as a center for trade, business, culture, and science.
What are emerging and developing countries (EDCs)?
EDCs are countries where economic development is increasing, sometimes rapidly, e.g. Brazil, China, Russia, and India.
What are push factors in urbanisation?
Push factors are reasons that drive people away from rural areas to urban areas.
