what are the uses of microorganisms?
A
- moulds are added to blue
Cheese - Yeast are used to make bread rise
- Bacteria are used to make yoghurt

How do moulds help cheese?
A
The mould gives the cheese a creamy texture and a distinctive sharp, tangy taste

how does yeast make bread rise ?
A
- yeast ferments the sugar to produce carbon dioxide – this is the gas that causes the bread to rise

how does bacteria help to make yoghurt?
A
- non-pathogenic bacteria is added to milk that has been pasteurised
- Bacteria ferment lactose and produces lactic acid
- The lactic acid acts on the proteins in the milk to thicken it and give it a sour or tangy taste
- probiotics are a supplement in some yoghurt which are said to give health benefit
