What is a CTO?
A CTO is an operation for the carriage of passengers or goods by air for hire or reward where —

(ii) the passengers or goods are carried to or from aremote aerodrome
What is an ATO?
Air transport operation means an operation for the carriage of passengers or goods by air for hire or reward except—
(1) a commercial transport operation:
(2) an adventure aviation operation + various helicopter ops.
Can a duty be extended due to a disruption caused by another crew?
No, not if the disrupt and extension occurs PRIOR to sign on. If it occurs after, yes it is possible (Pilots Discression) - Need to confirm this answer.
What are the contingency fuel figures for turboprop operations?
6% of A-B OR 5 minutes, whichever is greater. 3% for B-C.
When do we require a technical alternate?
When the destination is outside of weather alternate requirements, and it has 2 seperate non crossing runways (none in NZ), hence either always technical or weather.
What does ‘Land immediately at nearest suitable airport’ mean?
Land at the nearest airport that offers sufficient landing distance available and if required, emergency services to support the emergency or abnormality.
What does ‘Land at nearest suitable airport’ mean?
The airplane may continue to the destination airport or the nearest airport where maintenance services are available.
ICAO Aerodrome Reference Code?
The Q300 is code 3C. 3 refers to length of runway it can land on, and C refers to wingspan. Also called the ‘Aerodrome Reference Code’, ARC.
What temperatures is icing the worst?
0 degrees to -10 degrees.
Can we use flaps if we are holding in icing conditions?
No, flap must be zero degrees. FCOM 1.
How do you activate PAL lighting? How long does it last?
5 transmissions in 3 seconds. Lasts 20 minutes, should keep reactivating after every transmission.
When can the VMC Recircuit to Land Checklist be used?
May be used in VMC conditions, provided the after take off checklist has not been actioned.
Do we as Air NZ pilots have to comply with the currency requirements for IFR?
No, as per air operator certificate, need to comply with company requirements.
Do we as Air NZ pilots have to comply with the BFR requirements for an ATPL?
No.
Does an FO with an ATPL have to do 3 take off and landings in last 90 days?
By law, no, only when acting as PIC. By AMS, yes, both FO and Captain must have done 3 (Company requalification requirements will capture this first).
For instrument currency, what is a “similar type of navigation system”
Refers to 2D and 3D. 2D is no vertical guidance, 3D is (ILS, RNP LNAV/VNAV etc).
Is an RNP Approach with LNAV/VNAV considered a ‘Precision Approach’?
No, it is a Approach with vertical guidance (APV).
3 types of approach classifications?
- Precision Approach (PA).
- Approach with Vertical Guidance (APV).
- Non-Precision Approach (NPA).
Requirements for VOR approach through the FMS?
- Ground based VOR servicable, identified and RMI pointing.
- One aircraft VOR must be servicable.
- Map mode recommended for SA.
- VNAV coupled on final approach.
If the approach aid fails mid approach, can we continue?
If visual yes. If not visual company SOPs require MAP, either via dead reckoning or alternate navigation aid. CAA law permits nav aid to be changed mid approach and advise ATC.
RNP Values:
Enroute: 2.0
Terminal: (30nm of dep/arr): 1.0
Final approach fix: 0.3
MAP: 1.0
When can the 406 Mhz ELT be tested?
It CANNOT be unless co-ordinated 2 business days prior with RCCNZ.
