Data
Raw, unorganized facts and figures. (what you put into a computer)
Computer
A device that accepts input, processes data, stores data, and produces output, all according to a series of stored instructions.
Hardware
Includes all the physical components that make up the system unit plus the other devices connected to it, such as a keyboard or monitor.
Information
Data that has been processed to make it useful for a specific purpose. (what you can get out of a computer.)
Input
Data that is entered into a computer or other device.
Keyboard
An electronically controlled hardware component used to enter alphanumeric data (letters, numbers, and special characters).
Memory
Area of the computer that temporarily holds data waiting to be processed, stored, or output.
Motherboard
Main circuit board inside a personal computer to which other circuit boards can be connected; contains electrical pathways, called traces, etched onto it that allow data to move from one component to another.
Mouse
An input device that, when moved about on a flat surface, causes a pointer on the screen to move in the same direction.
Network
Two or more computers and other devices that are connected, for the purpose of sharing data and programs.
Peripheral devices

A device, such as a printer, connected to and controlled by a computer but external to the computers central processing unit. (CPU)
Processing
Manipulation of data by the computer to create information.
Software
Consists of programs containing instructions that direct the operation of the computer system and programs that enable users to perform specific applications, such as word processing.
3 main classifications: system, applications, and communications.
Storage devices
Provides for the permanent storage of programs, data, and information.
System unit
Main part of a personal computer system that contains a motherboard and other components necessary for processing information.
