W/EAD 1-4 Determine Desired Effect Flashcards
(5 cards)
Describe Clarifying Tactical Objectives
Attacking enemy targets is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
What is the overall goal of completing your mission?
The objective of such attacks is to stop, alter, or impede certain types of enemy activity.
Not simply to destroy or damage individual targets
Weaponeering, like targeting and execution planning, should respond to both overall campaign objectives and specific tactical objectives formulated by field commanders.
Describe Mission Command and Commander’s Intent (AFDP-1)
Provide Clear Commanders Intent
Use MTOs
What is Explicit vs. Implicit intent
Explicit Intent
Publicly stated for all staff and subordinates to perceive, think about, and act upon. The explicit intent is either vocalized in doctrine, orders, statements or can be derived from questions and answers.
Implicit Intent
Consists of all the unvocalized/undocumented commander expectations
How do the affects support OPLAN/OPORD directives?
Look at commander’s objectives and begin developing damage criteria that satisfy the requirements.
Check OPLAN, OPORD, FRAGO and ensure you are in line with overall intent
How does this damage criteria effect the overall objectives tactically and strategically
Ask specific questions
Remember, these desired effects are correlated to specific targets
End result: One or more likely munition impact points
Higher-order effects
Consider 2nd, 3rd
-Potential for A/C loss
-Doesn’t meet CC intent & effects HHQ mission objectives
-Risk not worth the reward
