Christian attitudes to poverty?
Genesis 1:26 = we are all imago dei regardless of wealth therefore everyone should be treated with justice Matthew 22:39 = 'love thy neighbour as thyself' Parable of Good Samaritan = treat/care for everyone as our 'neighbour' regardless of gender, race or religion Matthew 6:24 = 'you cannot serve God and wealth' (one cannot pursue god, an attitude of seflessness, and money (ie greed), an attitude of selfishness simultaneously) Deuteronomy 15:7 = 'do not be hard hearted or tight fisted towards your needy neighbour' (show compassion to needy regardless of whereabouts- be charitable and aim for equality) Amos 5 = 'you trample on the poor and force him to give u grain..seek good' (do not cause widening disparity due to exploitation of poor, instead be charitable)

Hindu attitudes to wealth?
Artha (gaining wealth) = one of the four aims of life. U should want money lawfully. This helps fulfil dharma or grihastha During divali Hindu business men make offerings to Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and it is believed the greater the sacrifice, the greater the wealth granted by her

Hindu attitudes to poverty?
Everyone's dharmas are interdependent and tend to embody the ideal of extending gods shelter to others 42% of Indians live under global poverty line (of $1.25 / day) aka 1/3 of global poor live in India !!!!!!!!!!!! Poor are cared for by extended family, then the community The grahastha should step outside front door before each meal and ask 3 times 'is anyone hungry? Please take ur meal' Up to 10% income should be given to needy within the community SEWA international

SEWA international?
Charity to relieve poverty and help the needy. Wants to help education and training of poor students and assist them financially They believe 'serving humanity is serving God' Run by dedicated volunteers Eg project = Nepal EQ 2015 : they sent in volunteers to join the rescue operation and provide relief... They are still appealing for volunteers

What is DEC?
Disasters emergency commission Brings 13 UK aid charity in crisis times (eg Red Cross, oxfam, Christian aid etc) Launches appeals to raise money to help those impacted by disaster Eg in March 2013 they launched appeal to help Syrian crisis Syria had been in state of war for 2 years- 9.3 mil needed aid and 4 mil needed food. Dec raised £12 mil in donations to support efforts in Syria

Christian aid?
They want to 'challenge and change' structures that favour the rich Eg project = typhoon Haiyan 2013: they reached over 180k people providing vital supplies like food water and blankets. They are now ensuring people have sustainable source of income and are providing cash grants to help rebuild community
