What is good nutrient?
An adequate, well-balanced diet combined with regular physical activity
What is poor nutrient?
Lead to reduced immunity, increased risk to disease, impaired physical and mental development, and reduced productivity
Australian Dietary Guidelines
Developed in 1979 to encourage good health and reduced diet related disease
Guideline 1
To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs
Guideline 2
Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods in these five food groups everyday: vegetables, fruit, gain (wholegrain), lean meats, dairy
Guideline 3
Limit intake of foods containing saturated fats, added salt, sugars and alcohol
Guideline 4
Encourage, support and promote breastfeeding
Guideline 5
Care for your food; prepare and store it safely
What are the current nutrition issues?
Obesity, portion control, food allergies/intolerances, lack of adequate vitamins/minerals
What is nutrition?
The intake of food considered in relation to body’s dietary needs
What is biochemistry?
The study of chemical processes within (or relating to) living organisms
What are the primary focuses of biochemistry?
Organic molecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins
Chemical pathways: energy release from carbohydrates, lipids, proteins
