Week 2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is energy?
Amount of work required to change the state of the physical system
Nutrients
Substance in food that provides structural and functional components for the energy of the body
Carbohydrates
17 kJ/g - The first source of energy and is highly regulated
Protein
17 kJ/g - Well regulated and is predominantly found in muscles
Lipids
37 kJ/g - The richest form of energy and is required for immune health and absorption of some vitamins
Alcohol
29 kJ/g - High energy content per gram and causes a rapid rise in alcohol oxidation
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Energy used whilst asleep
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
The minimum energy required for normal daily activities
Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)
Energy cost of food consumption
Thermic Effect of Activity
The most variable component of energy expenditure and is the energy cost of daily activities about RMR and TEF. It includes involuntary muscular action e.g. shivering and fidgeting
What are the four components of nutritional assessment?
Clinical observation/medical history, anthropometric measurement, biochemical analysis/assessment, dietary evaluation
