Week 1 - Continuity of Life Flashcards
(11 cards)
Reproduction
Continuity of life
Process by which organisms produce offspring similar to themselves
DNA
Common genetic material for all organisms
Carries info coded in genes
Gene
Section of DNA that codes for a particular characteristic
Can be read and switched on/off independently of other genes
Gene said to be expressed when it is turned on and read
Chromosomes
Located in nucleus of cell
Carry genes
One DNA molecule along with proteins associated with it
Karyotypes
An organisms complete set of chromosomes, arranged as homologous pairs
Asexual reproduction
Living things that originate from one parent
Usually closely resemble their parent - one one source of heredity information
Sexual Reproduction
2 sources of heredity material
Carried in reproductive cells - gametes
Potential for differences between generations greater than asexual reproduction
Homologous Chromosomes
Pair of chromosomes that have the same size, shape and genes at the same location
Autosomes
Chromosomes that are the same in both male & female species
Sex chromosomes
Chromosomes that affect sex traits
One sex has homogenous set
Other sex has dissimilar set
Binary Fission
Occurs in prokaryotic cells eg. Bacteria, amoeba
Produces 2 daughter cells with same number of chromosomes as parental cells
Replicate their single DNA strand
