Founded as a small town, so like 753 bc
- the etruscans to the north were the dominant and developed civilization
- according to tradition, Rome was ruled by those kings but they were thrown out and founded thr roman republic

Virgil

A
  • a roman poet writing during the imperial reign of emperor Augustus
  • he wrote several long poems but his most well known work was the epic “the Aeneid”, thr story of the founding of the Roman peope from aeneas, a Trojan prince
  • imitates the homeric epics, but made as a written text
  • made to please the emperor and published in 19 bc

Aeneas

A
  • son of ahrodite who escaped the destruction of Troy with his father and son according to Homer
  • Roman legend shows that this prince will escape to Italy and found the Roman people
  • aenaes was claimed as the ancestor of Julius Caesar and Augustus, his son was the founder of the Julian family
  • in Virgil version, it shows the journey of aeneas like odysseus in the Odyssey

Romulus and Remus

A
  • the historian Livyis also writing “history of Rome” during the reign of Augustus, retells the early history of Rome including the ancient myth romulus and Remus
  • 450 years after, the twins are left to die but suckle on a she-wolf
  • grow up, overthrow the wicked king, romulus kills Remus in an argument after founding Rome
  • rolmulus becomes a god

    -a clever propagandist, viewed himself as the champion of the republic
  • consults the senate, sense of power
  • rightful heir of Julius Ceasar
  • beautified the city of Rome
  • uses Greek myth and Greek culture to reinforce the messages and his own importance to Rome
