Extra-mural city sanctuaries
-using religion alters as a border and control
Temple of Zeus at olympia
- built in 468 bc
- depicts the moment before the chariot race where Pelops will defeat king Oinomais of Elis and gain the hand of the daughter Hippodamia (he wins though trickery-bribes the servant Myrtilus to replace oenomaus chariot lynch pin with wax that will melt and kill the king)
- Basically a myth but also shows the most important aspect of the temple, the Olympic games
- observed by Pausanias, 2nd AD geographer
Libation
A drink poured out as an offering to a deity
Sacrifice
Offering to the gods, like animals
Temenos
A piece of land set aside or cut off from everyday use and assigned as a special domain from the veneration of a temporal or a god
Altar
Place of offering to a dedicated god
Panathenaic festival
Multi day festival where the Athenians honor Athena
Includes competitions, cultural events and religious ceremonies
Centaurmachy
Battle between the lapiths and the centaurs. Fought at the wedding of King pirithous and hippodamia.
- centaurs were invited but tried to kidnap Hippodamia, defeated then expelled
- shown at the temple of Zeus at olympia
- Greek superiority over foreign powers
Amazonomachy
Battle between the greeks and the amazonians
- unruly women not commanded by men and seen as a threat on the acropolis
Pythia
High priestess at the temple of Apollo in Delphi
- maiden of noble birth who wore a girls dress in later life
