Week 11 - The Reproductive System Flashcards
(41 cards)
What are the primary organs of the female reproductive system?
Ovaries, uterine (Fallopian) tubes, uterus, vagina, external genitalia (clitoris, labia minora/majora), and mammary glands.
What are the functions of the ovaries?
Produce ova via oogenesis, ovulate, and secrete oestrogen and progesterone.
What is the function of the uterine tubes?
Transport ovum, site of fertilisation, connect ovaries to uterus.
What are the three regions of the uterine tube?
Isthmus (proximal), ampulla (middle), infundibulum with fimbriae (distal).
What are the layers of the uterus?
Perimetrium (outer), myometrium (middle, smooth muscle), endometrium (inner mucosa).
What is the function of the endometrium?
Site of implantation and sheds during menstruation if no pregnancy.
What is the function of the cervix?
Produces mucus, facilitates childbirth, separates uterus from vagina.
What is the role of the vagina?
Passageway for childbirth and menstrual flow, acidic environment deters infection.
What is the role of the mammary glands?
Produce, secrete, and eject milk in response to pregnancy hormones.
What are the main male reproductive organs?
Testes, epididymis, vas deferens, urethra, penis, seminal vesicles, prostate, bulbourethral glands.
Where does spermatogenesis occur?
In the seminiferous tubules of the testes.
What are Sertoli cells?
Supporting cells in seminiferous tubules; nourish developing sperm.
What are Leydig cells?
Cells between tubules that secrete testosterone.
What is the function of the epididymis?
Site for sperm maturation and motility development.
What is the function of the vas deferens?
Transports sperm from epididymis to urethra.
What are the functions of seminal vesicles?
Produce ~65% of semen, nourish and activate sperm.
What does the prostate gland secrete?
Fluid to energise sperm; forms ~30% of semen.
What is the role of the bulbourethral glands?
Secrete alkaline mucus to protect sperm.
What is the function of the scrotum?
Maintains optimal testicular temperature.
When does oogenesis begin?
During foetal development.
When does spermatogenesis begin?
At puberty.
How many ova are produced per oogonium?
One ovum (and polar bodies).
How many sperm are produced per spermatogonium?
Four sperm.
What is spermiogenesis?
Final maturation step where sperm gain characteristic shape.
