Week 2: Strokes Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the two major arteries that supply blood supply?
Internal carotid and vertebral arteries
What is the positives and negatives of the circle of Willis?
-protects the brain via collateral circulation( other arteries can compensate for this and still ensure appropriate profusion for the brain)
-arteries that come off the circle of Willis e.g. ACA,MCA and PCA so these are not protected by collateral system
What does anterior cerebral artery supply?
Medial and superior part of the frontal lobe, anterior parietal lobe.
This includes
what does the middle cerebral artery supply?
the lateral cerebral surfaces and deep structures such as basal ganglia and internal capsule.
what does the posterior cerebral artery supply?
the occipital lobe and inferiomedial temporal lobe and thalamus
what does the basilar artery supply?
brain stem(mid brains, pons, medulla) and cerebellum
what is a stroke?
a stroke is caused by a disruption of blood supply to the brain resulting in a sudden and lasting neurological deficits.
What is a tia?
It’s a mini stroke which is caused by a temporary disruption of blood supply to the brain which can cause sudden symptoms similar to a stroke. The effects are resolved within 24 hours
What occurs for a lacunar stroke?
-pure sensory stroke
-pure motor stroke
-sensorimotor stroke
-ataxic hemiparesis
What occurs for a posterior circulation stroke?
-cranial nerve palsy and contralateral motor/sensory deficits
-bilateral motor/sensory deficits
-cerebellar dysfunction
-isolated homonymous hemianopia
