Correlation
A measure of the extent to which two factors vary together, thus how well each factor predicts each other.
Debriefing
The post experimental explanation of a study including its purpose and deceptions, to its participants.
Double-Blind Procedure
An experimental procedure in which both the research participants and the research staff are ignorant about weather the research participants have received the treatment or a placebo.
Placebo Effect
Experimental results caused by expectations alone.
Random Assignment
Assigning participants to experimental and control groups by chance, thus minimizing preexisting difference between those assigned to different groups.
Control Group
In an experiment the group that is not exposed to the treatment.
Experimental Group
In an experiment, the group that is exposed to the treatment that is, to one version of the independent variable.
Dependent Variable
The variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable.
Independent Variable
The experimental factor that is manipulated.
Confounding Variable
A factor other that the independent variable that might produce an effect in the experiment.
