Genes
Biochemical units of heredity that forms chromosomes
Genome
The complete set of genetic information for an organism
Heritability
The extent to which differences in a trait can be attributed to our genetic makeup
Molecular Genetics
The field of biology and genetics that studies the structure and function of genes at a molecular level
Unconscious
The deepest level of consciousness as a pool of unwanted unacceptable ideas wishes or desires memories and emotions
Id
Part of the human personality that is made up of all of our inborn biological urges that seek out immediate gratification
Ego
Prevents us from acting on every urge we have
Superego
Acts as our mental guide and mediates between the id and the ego
Oedipus Complex
Concentrates soon a child’s desire to have sexual relations with the parent of the opposite sex
Displacement
When a person shifts his or her impulses from an unacceptable target to a more acceptable/ less threatening target
Repression
Attempt made by an individual to repel ones own desires and impulses toward pleasurable instincts by excluding the desire from ones consciousness and holding or subduing it in the unconscious

The field in which variation among individuals is separated into genetic versus environmental components
