Sound Inventory
pool of sounds that English speakers use to construct the words of the English language
International Phonetic Alphabet
transcription system for each sound in language, represented by a separate symbol for each sound.

General American
standard reference accent of North American English
Pulmonic Egressive Air Stream Mechanism
sounds made by air being pushed from the lungs through the mouth or nose.
Pulmonic Ingressive Mechanism
vocal sounds being made while breathing in
frequency

Vocal Tract
the passage above the larynx where speech sounds are shaped.

small bump on roof of mouth just behind the upper front teeth

point of closest constriction in the vocal tract
bilabial articulation
involving both lips, sounds constriction at the lips (b)

obstruction at the alveolar ridge (d)

involve only lower lip and upper front teeth (f)

various production methods of consonants

Dipthongs
two part vowel articulation- change in auditory quality with in a single syllable

simple vowels which show no change in quality
