Week 5 Flashcards
(13 cards)
think about hormones
how exercise helps with artery health
exercise -> increase hormone nitric oxide production (shear stress of arterial pathway) -> artery dilation -> decreased BP -> decrease AS risk
nitric oxide
- produced by endothelial cells
anti-atherogenic effects of endothelium and NO
- prevent AS symptoms
- prevents monocytes and macrophages in subintimal space
- prevents LDL etnering
- VD decreasing shear and pressure
- decreased smooth muscle proliferation
- decreased superoxide anions, ox-LDL and foam cell formation
how endurance stimualtes eccentric hypetrophy of heart
increased volume of ventricle -> increased stroke volume -> eccentric hypertrophy (walls thickening and diameter increase) -> increased VO2 peak
think about fats/blood
impact of regular exercise (bouchard study)
- plasma HDL-C decrease
- plasma triclygeride decrease
- resting systolic BP decrease
- plasma fasting insulin increase

High normal BP
120-139 / 80-89
20 20 10 10 (S)
Grade 1 Hypertension
140-159 / 90-99
20 20 10 10 (S)
Grade 2 Hypertension
160-170 / 100-109
20 20 10 10 (S)
Gade 3 Hypertension
180+ / 110+
BP changes for decreased CV risk?
- SBP 8-10 decreased
- DBP - 4-6 decreased
Statin
medication that can lower cholesterol (25% decreased LDL-C)
Primum Non Nocere
goal of exercise as therapy to achieve physiological, symptomatic, psychological and vocational benefits for patients at low risk
Exercise Paradox
chronic exercise risk (30-40%) for naive older individuals (minimize risk and monitor)
