What to measure while exercise testing

A

Cardiovascular: chest pain, signs of impaired perfusion, light headedness, ECG rhythm changes, inappropriate changes in HR or BP
Respiratory: intolerance dyspnoea
MSK impairment: leg cramps or extreme leg muscle fatigue, general signs of fatigue or subject asks to stop

Indications to stop an exercise test

A
  • Onset of angina or angina-like symptoms
  • Drop in SBP from baseline despite increase in workload
  • Excessive rise in SBP > 250mmHg
  • Signs of poor perfusion
  • Failure or HR to increase with increased exercise

2 methods of calculating exercise intensity

A
  1. %HRmax
    Find HRmax, calculate 70-85% of that and equates to 55% to 75% vo2max
  2. HRRmax (better)
    Subtract resting HR from HRmax and find 60-80% of that and then add resting HR to those values
