What is group termination?
the ending of the group
What are some feelings that people can experience with group termination?
- loss
- anxiety
- withdrawl
- denial/avoidance
- devaluing importance of group
- silence/inacitivty
- expression of frustration, anger, sadness
- early departure
- raising new issues that were not discussed in group earlier
What is premature termination?
leaving group before one would expect
- drop out early
- unable to make commitment to group
- end session early
- made a commitment to group but leave before work is complete
common in groups with HEAVY content and require a lot of emotional investment
What responsibilities does the leader have to ensure healthy termination?
- review group experience
2 . review group/individual concerns - counselling skills
- finish unfinished business
- feedback on skills learned
- generalizing the learning (how to apply it outside group)
- addressing closure throughout sessions
- encourage emotional expression
- compare early experiences to later ones
- provide a STRUCTURED END (token of completion if possible!)
- help make transition plan out of group
- refer if needed
What are 3 factors that affect termination?
- resolution of “issues” (did they get what they wanted out of the group when they came in initally)
- sociocultural background (age, gender, income, family, demographic, etc.)
- group structure and culture (was it cohesive or nah)
What 3 main privacy laws are in place in terms of closure and confidentiality of members information within the OT practice?
- Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
- Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)

What is evaluation all about?
Were you successful or not? what went well and what didnt? Did we reach the goals?
What is a formative group evaluation?
- informs group process and progress of particpants
- throughout sessions
- identifies gaps to address in group to improve individual or group goals
- through an informal approach (feedback for example)
- flexible and adaptable to group climate
What is a summative group evaluation?
- to assess OVERALL outcomes/goals
- at the end of group
- collect evidence of outcomes/goals
- done through measures (qualitative and quantitative, satisfaction questionnaire, outcome measure, knowledge testing, skill testing, 3rd party report)
What is shown if a group is effective? (x5)
- if goals are understood
- group tasks accomplished
- leadership promoted participant responsibility and problem solving
- created an space filled with trust, support, safety, creativity, and constructive resolution of conflict
- evidence of group growth and development
