What is premature termination?

A

leaving group before one would expect
- drop out early
- unable to make commitment to group
- end session early
- made a commitment to group but leave before work is complete

common in groups with HEAVY content and require a lot of emotional investment

What responsibilities does the leader have to ensure healthy termination?

A
  1. review group experience
    2 . review group/individual concerns
  2. counselling skills
  3. finish unfinished business
  4. feedback on skills learned
  5. generalizing the learning (how to apply it outside group)
  6. addressing closure throughout sessions
  7. encourage emotional expression
  8. compare early experiences to later ones
  9. provide a STRUCTURED END (token of completion if possible!)
  10. help make transition plan out of group
  11. refer if needed
