Week 7 Learning Outcomes Flashcards
(23 cards)
What are the different types of vessels found in the cardiovascular system?
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
What is the function of arteries in the cardiovascular system?
Carry blood away from the heart
What is the function of veins in the cardiovascular system?
Return blood to the heart
What is the function of capillaries in the cardiovascular system?
Facilitate exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste
What are the structural differences between arteries and veins?
- Arteries have thicker walls
- Veins have valves
- Arteries have a smaller lumen
What are the chambers of the heart?
- Right atrium
- Right ventricle
- Left atrium
- Left ventricle
What are the main valves of the heart?
- Tricuspid valve
- Pulmonary valve
- Mitral valve
- Aortic valve
What are the adjoining blood vessels of the heart?
- Aorta
- Pulmonary arteries
- Pulmonary veins
- Superior and inferior vena cava
Outline the pathway of blood circulation through the body.
Heart → Arteries → Capillaries → Veins → Heart
What is the pathway of the conduction system of the heart?
- Sinoatrial (SA) node
- Atrioventricular (AV) node
- Bundle of His
- Purkinje fibers
Define blood pressure.
The force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels
What is systolic pressure?
The pressure in the arteries during the contraction of the heart
What is diastolic pressure?
The pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats
What is mean arterial pressure?
The average pressure in a person’s arteries during one cardiac cycle
What is end diastolic volume?
The volume of blood in the ventricles at the end of filling (diastole)
What is end systolic volume?
The volume of blood remaining in the ventricles after contraction (systole)
What is stroke volume?
The amount of blood pumped by the heart with each beat
What is ejection fraction?
The percentage of blood that is ejected from the heart during each contraction
List the factors that influence mean arterial pressure (MAP).
- Cardiac output
- Total peripheral resistance
What role do baroreceptors play in blood pressure control?
They detect changes in blood pressure and initiate reflexes to maintain homeostasis
Describe the components of the lymphatic system.
- Lymphatic vessels
- Lymph nodes
- Spleen
- Thymus
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
To transport lymph and help in immune responses
Describe the transportation of lymphatics within the body.
Lymph is transported through lymphatic vessels back to the circulatory system
