What is a hijab?
It is a square scarf that covers the head and neck but not the face
What is a chador?
It is a full-length cloak, that covers both head and body but not face, typically held closed by the wearer’s hands, which remain hidden beneath.
What is the niqab?
It is a veil that covers the face, though eyes remain visible.
It is usually worn with a loose black robe known as abaya that covers a woman from head to toe.
What is a burka?
It is a full-body covering garment, that covers the entire face, with only a mesh screen for the woman to see through.

Why do women in Islam wear coverings (with regards to the Q’ran)?
- Obey the Islamic principle of modesty
- be recognised as Muslim women and avoid harassment
- show devotion to God by dressing respectfully
- protect their privacy from unrelated men
Why do Muslim women wear head-coverings (with regards to personal approach)?
- the Hijab can be seen as a religious tradition
- it can be a source of empowerment and choice rather than a sign of oppression
Why do some Muslim women choose not to wear the Hijab?
- they believe that these verses of the Q’ran are now outdated
- wearing the Hijab now causes women to be targets of Islamophobia
- they interpret the Q’ran’s words differently and ‘guard their modesty’ in other ways
- believe that if Allah had wanted women to cover their body, there would be no need to tell men to ‘lower their gaze’
What is the role of women in Islam?

Where do women worship in the Mosque?
- in a designated area separate from the men. This can be through partitions, separate rooms or by having women pray in the back of the main prayer hall
