1) feminism - theories of education Flashcards
(8 cards)
(FETOE) social control
Education reinforces patriarchy and therefore women. Different subject choice women have less access to top jobs. male gaze and sexual double standards, e.g uniform rules make women objects further controlling them.
(FETOE) secondary socialisation
socialises boys and girls into different gender identities, boys doing prestigious subjects e.g science and maths, girls passive and communicative with boys getting best jobs
(FETOE) Specialist Skills
Education does pass on skills but these are gendered, Boys - instrumental role, Girls - expressive role
(FETOE) Sifting and Sorting
Prepares kids for different roles in family and society. Gender inequality reinforced - feminine subjects (e.g. english, drama and food tech), gender scripts are adhered too through hidden curriculum where patriarchy is taught
(FETOE) Social Control Evaluation
Functionalists see this as too negative. Boys and girls choose different subjects because they are naturally suited too, e.g. girls and childcare because it is their biological role. Prepare them well for primary role in society - caregiver
(FETOE) Secondary Socialisation Evaluation
Marxists point out ignored more important conflict of class. Schools are actually socialising pupils into values of capitalism, over patriarchy
(FETOE) Sifting and Sorting Evaluation
Girls now outperform boys in education and are more likely to progress to higher education, undermining view they are only prepared for expressive role
However feminists point out despite better grades and higher education men still get top jobs
(FETOE) Specialist Skills Evaluation
Postmodernists see this as outdated girls and boys have choices in education and can learn whatever suits them.
