DURKEIM - Studied suicide wanted to prove sociology was a science. compared suicide rates in Europe spotted patterns, suicide lower in Italy very catholic, higher UK (protestant), stats at face value assumed were correct
PUBLIC STATISTICS - Official stats used in policy making, e.g no of births - school places. OFSTED study exam results, success of school
