Product Design Paper 1 - Technical Principles > 10 - Composites - General characteristics > Flashcards
What is a composite?
A material comprised of two or more different materials. Results in a material with enhanced properties
What are the most commonly used composites?
Carbon-fibre reinforced polymer
Glass-fibre reinforced polymer
Because they have the most commonly used and therefore useful properties, such as being lightweight, corrosion resistant, tough, hard, and have a low thermal expansion. They can be easily moulded into 3D forms using the lay-up method.
(Good properties for sports equipment)
