Q

Explain the methods of enforcement for the “One-child policy” in China:

A
  • If couples illegally had more than one child, they would be fined starting from $370 and going up. This will discourage couples from having more than one child because they want to reduce the risk of them getting a fine. (1)
  • In order to discourage couples from having more children, China stated that no payment will be made to support the education and healthcare of the second child, leaving the costs in the couples hands which may discourage them from having a second child. (1)
  • If couples only had one child, there will be better employment opportunities that would be made available to them. This was used to discourage couples from having more children and instead they will probably be more interested in earning more income so that they can support themselves. (1)

Q

Explain the impacts of the “One-child policy” has on China: (3)

A

This policy affected the male to female ratio of the population in China because generally males were preferred due to the belief back in that day where male were superior to women. This caused an uneven ratio of men to women in the country. (1)

Because couples were only giving birth to one child, there was a lack in the quantity of the youth population because one they, this youth population would have to support the elder and due to the large elder population and the small youth population, this means that a lot of pressure will be placed on the young population (1)

Due to the one child policy, approximately 400 million births have been prevented by the government and because of this, the population growth rate starts to decrease and the growth of population in China becomes more stable. (1)
