  • Invasion causes inflammation process
  • ->Leads to necrosed bone
  • –>Results in sequestrum - bone is disconnected/walled off – difficult to treat
  • —->Becomes a chronic pathology

2 main types/causes of osteomyelitis

A
  1. Exogenous
    - Infection originates outside the body
    - ->Open Fracture
  2. Endogenous
    - Infection is carried by bloodstream from other parts of the body

Risk factors for developing osteomyelitis?

A
  • Infections or anything that can cause infections!
  • Catheters
  • IV drug use
  • Dialysis
  • Salmonella - highly susceptible to getting salmonella that leads to OM= SCD, children
  • Poor dental care
  • Trauma

-Bone Pain
–>Constant, localized, pulsating
-Worsens with movement
ACute = Fever > 101 degrees F
-Redness, swelling, tenderness, heat
-Vascular Insufficiency
