Definition
A
- Progressive foot deformity as static subluxation of the 1st MPJ
- phalanx abducts and ext rotates while met adducts and internally rotates
- unclear cause, genetic predisposition
- Four stages

Signs and symptoms
A
- Pain when in tight footwear
- Exostosis around 1st MPJ
- initially will be no pain

Diagnosis
A
- Hx of hallux pain
- X-ray useful to assess severity of deformity and amount of 1st MPJ degeneration

Treatment
A
- Well fitting stable footwear and orthoses slow down HAV progression
- 1st MPJ mobilisation
- Reduce inflammation and pain, NSAIDS, Icing
- foot intrinsic exercises
- medial bunion pads to reduce inflammation
