119 HAZMAT/ HAZWASTE/ Pollution Control Fundamentals Flashcards
(15 cards)
Define the term HM
Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT): Any material that, because of its quantity, concentration or physical or chemical characteristics, may pose a substantial hazard to human health or environment when purposely released or accidentally spilled
Define the term HW
Hazardous Waste: Any discarded material (liquid, solid, or gas) which meets the definition of HM and/or is designated as a hazardous waste by the EPA or state authority
State the purpose and information contained on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Composition, chemical, and physical characteristics, health and safety hazards, and precautions for safe handling and use.
Explain the general procedures to be followed when a HAZMAT/HW spill is discovered
- Discovery 2. Notification 3. Initiation of action 4 Evaluation 5.Containment 6. Damage control 7.Dispersion 8.Cleanup and decontamination 9.Disposal 10.Certification for re-entry 11. Follow-up reports
State the PPE required when handling HAZMAT/HW
Eye protection, respiratory devices, and gloves, refer to the SDS
Discuss the disposal limitations for Grease
Put into approved containers. Dispose ashore.
Solid wastes must be negative buoyant / may be thrown overboard if >50NM from shore.
Discuss the disposal limitations for Hydraulic Fluid
Keep synthetic fluids separate from other types of fluids. Dispose ashore
Discuss the disposal limitations for Fuels
Put into approved containers. Dispose ashore.
Discuss the disposal limitations for Waste Oils
Put into approved containers. Dispose ashore. Solid waste that is negative buoyant may be thrown overboard 50 Nautical miles off shore.
Describe required training for all hands with respect to the HAZMAT/HW program
HM in work area, disposal procedures, hazard warning labels, MSDS, protective measures, and emergency procedures.
Define Oily Waste
Waste that has oil on it, such as a broken part
Define Waste Oil
Oil that can no longer be used and is now meant to be disposed of.
Describe the actions required for oil spills outside the US Contiguous zone
Initiate immediate action to mitigate the effects of spill
Notify the predesignated fleet Navy On Scene Coordinator, by Naval Msg.
Clean up small spills and inform proper shore based personnel
Discuss proper marking of HAZMAT containers
Must clearly identify the materials name, manufacture’s name and address, and the nature of the hazard,
Discuss the precautions observed when handling flammables
-Avoid accumulation of vapors and to control sources of ignition
-Control all ignition sources
-Use plastic or metal containers or safety cans
-Use bottle Carriers
-Do not heat with an open Flame
-Store flammables in approved metal lockers properly labeled
