Motivation
Internal/external forces that produce the Direction, Intensity and persistence of behaviour
3 key component of motivation
Direction: What kind of behaviour needs motivated
intensity : how much effort : really motivated vs not much
Persistence: maintaining intensity over a continuous period
3 types of motivation
AMotivation: Lack of motivation
Extrinsic motivation: purpose of achieving some end/outcome external factor
intrinsic motivation: Behaviours demonstrated voluntarily. Comes from within
The Trait approach
Personal factor: motivation is primarily a function of individual characteristics (e.g Needs, goals, personality)
Situation-centred Approach
Motivation is primarily determined by situational factor (Envionrment)
Interactionist approach
Both personal + situational factors

Undifferentiated: inability to choose between effort and ability (Child)
Differentiated: able to and choose to differentiate between ability and effort.
(Ability doesn’t always relate to effort)
Dispositional goal orientation:
Personal factor
Task Goal orientation (Mastery Orientation): improvement from where I was at
Ego Goal orientation: Norm-referenced. Comparing to others. Define success by being better than others.
Motivational climate
Perceived Motivational climate: athletes perception of achievement goals promoted by others
Mastery-based climate: An emphasis on mastery learning, effort, individual improvement, and cooperation tend to evoke a task involvement.
Performance-based climate: comparison to others. Evoke ego involvement.
