  • US backed noncommunist dictator Syngman Rhee
  • N. overran S., so UN sent help

  • UN caused N. surrender and pushed them back up to Yalu River
  • Mao sent Chinese troops to help N. and pushed S. back to ~38th parallel
  • Both sides signed an armistice and nearly two million N. and S. Korean troops remained on either side of the demilitarized zone
