The development of colonial societies began in the Americas during late 17th century. With many European nations venturing over the Atlantic, tension aroused within the colonies established from different European motherlands as well as Native Americans. The Salem Witch Trials of Massachusetts and the Pueblo Revolt in present-day New Mexico presented strain relations developing colonies had to face at the time. The desire of a greater economical benefit, differing social standings, and conflicting religious morals including belief systems contributed to the stress created amongst the communities, as there was not an official governance to abide by throughout the Americas.

Q

The French and Indian War (1754-1763) altered the relationship between Britain and its North American colonies. Assess this change with regard to TWO of the following in the period between 1763 and 1775.

A

Land Acquisition

  • Canada (and dispute over Quebec and Northwest lands)
  • Proclamation Act of 1763
  • Indian treaties open lands to settlement (Treaty of Hard Labor)
  • Lands west of the Appalachians Mountain to the Mississippi (by land companies)
  • Pontiac’s Rebellion and Paxton Boys’ Response

Economic

  • Conflicts over duties and taxes- “costs of empire”
  • War debts and western defense costs
  • Enumbered goods
  • Post-colonial depression and rising colonial poverty
  • Boycott and nonimportation strategies by the colonies

The French and Indian War reconstructed and altered the relationship between Britain and North American colonies. The British and the North American colonies at first did have a really good relationship because British patriotism did seem to rise from the colonists. The British were the ones that help the colonist win The French and Indian War. The relationship between the two then obviously get affected when land acquisition and economics tensions start to rise between the two. The aftermath of the French and Indian War, showed that the British and North American colonies couldn’t put their differences aside.
