Photosynthesis Flashcards
what is photosynthesis?
- when plants use the simple molecules, carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen
- this requires light energy which is absorbed by chlorophyll
- it occurs in plants as well as some bacteria and protoctista
photosynthesis word equation?
carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
photosynthesis symbol equation?
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
what does photosynthesis convert light energy into?
stored chemical energy - this can be used by the organism for respiration and for making other biological molecules
nitrates (NO3-) use by plant?
required to make amino acids (and so proteins) and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)
nitrates (NO3-) deficiency symptoms?
stunted growth
magnesium (Mg) use by plant?
required to make chlorophyll
magnesium (Mg) deficiency symptom?
yellow leaves
phosphates (PO43-) use by plant?
required to make nucleic acids (RNA and DNA); part of cell membrane
phosphates (PO43-) deficiency symptoms?
poor root growth; purple younger leaves
