Spirochetes

A

slender, large, spiral
Leptospira - lives in kidneys, shed in urine. can be transmitted through open wounds, inhalation. Flu like symptoms, may progress to kidney damage or meningitis
Brachyspira - Bloody diarrhea in pigs. Vent disease (rabbit syphilis) Spread during sexual activity.
Borrelia - Causes Lyme disease (discovered Lyme, Connecticut in 1975) carried by ticks.

Camplobacter

A

commensal in mouth, GIT, prepuce, or genital tract.
stain poorly.
Like CO2 for growth.
some are zoonotic
Do not metabolize sugars (few tests available)
Abortion in cattle and sheep, may cause infertility, metritis
Diarrhea. very common cause of food poisoning (C. jejuni)
