Craik & Lockharts Memory Model Flashcards
What is Craik & Lockharts levels of processing model?
What we do with information rather than how we store it
Memory method for craik & lockharts model
CUM P
What does CUM P stand for?
Consideration
Understood
Meaning
Processed
A sporting example for craik & lockharts model
When learning the overarm serve in volleyball, the coach explains to the performer that the movement pattern is the same as a tennis serve. The performer considers and understands this and their memories of performing the tennis serve make it meaningful to them. The lord thought the volleyball player gives this information the deeper it is processed and the more likely it will be remembered
9 levels of craik & lockharts model
- Deep consideration
- 1st level- structural
- 2nd level- phonetic
- 3rd level- semantic
- Shallow- not much processing
- Deep- more processing
- More processing- less retention
- Remembered
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 1
How deeply we consider information determines how long the memory lasts
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 2
First/ structural level involves paying attention to what the information looks like
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 3
The second level is phonetic/ acoustic which refers to processing sounds
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 4
The third level is semantic which considers the actual meaning of the information
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 5
First and second/ structural and phonetic levels are shallow because they don’t involve much processing
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 6
The third/ semantic level is deep because it involves processing
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 7
The deeper the processing/ memory trace the less likely the information will be retained/ stores in LTM
Craik & Lockhart levels of processing model: 9
Information is remembered of it has meaning / is understood/ has been considered/ has personal relevance/ is interested/ is exciting
Strengths of craik and lockharts level of processing model
Explains that if we understand something we are more likely to remember it
Explains that the longer something is considered the more likely we are to remember it
Weaknesses of craik & lockharts levels of processing model
Depth of processing does not always lead to recall
Theory struggles to define deep processing
Simple people pay very little attention but still recall information
