More common in women 30-50, due to stress, lack of sleep and ETOH.

S/Sx of FMS

A

-Pain, stiffness, and tenderness at specific sites like the back of the neck, or trunk.
-The tender points are also trigger points that if palpated can elicit pain in a predictable, reproducible pattern.
-Pain is usually described as burning or gnawing.
-Increased muscle tenderness due to inability to tolerate pain.
-GI disturbances
-Genitourinary manifestations: dysuria, frequency, urgency, pelvic pain
-Cardiovascular: dyspnea, chest pain, dysrhythmias
-Visual disturbances: blurry vision and dry eyes
-Neurologic symptoms: including forgetfulness and concentration problems.

FMS Meds

A

-Antidepressants: Amitriptyline, nortriptyline
-Anticonvulsants: gabapentin, pregabalin
-SNRIs: duloxetine
-Trazadone, tramadol

All promote sleep, reduce pain, and reduce muscle spasms

Nursing Care for FMS pts

A

Encourage exercise, low impact aerobic exercise, walking, swimming etc.

No coffee or alcohol because these can be irritating for muscles.

Complementary & alternative therapies (CAM): tai chi, acupuncture, hypnosis, and stress management.

Refer to arthritis foundation and national FMS association.
