14: Hydrocarbons Flashcards
(9 cards)
Addition polymerisation
The formation of a long chain molecule when many monomers join together (the polymer is the only product).
Carbocation
A compound containing a carbon atom bearing a positive charge.
Combustion of alkanes [3]
-A reaction that releases energy where alkanes undergo complete or incomplete combustion.
- Complete combustion produces CO₂ and H₂O;
-incomplete combustion can also produce CO and carbon particulates.
Cracking
The process of breaking long-chain alkanes into smaller, more useful hydrocarbons.
Crude oil [3]
A finite resource found in rocks
- formed from ancient biomass (mainly plankton).
-Most compounds in crude oil are hydrocarbons.
Dehydration
A reaction involving the loss of water.
Diol
A molecule with two alcohol functional groups.
Polymerisation [2]
-The process of making a polymer from monomers.
-Includes addition and condensation polymerisation.
The inductive effect
The polarisation of a bond caused by electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups.
