Define Homeostasis
Process of keeping a state of balance in the body
Define Interdependence in the body
Systems must work together to support human life
Define Disease
A disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body
Name some causes of diseases
Genetic or delpmental errors, infections, poisons, nutritional deficiencies or impalance, toxicity, unfavorable environmental factors
What is difference between signs and symptoms?
Signs of disease are objective and can be measured, while symptoms of disease are subjective which can’t be observed by anyone else other than the hostess.
What are some signs of diseases?
Fever, high blood pressure, rash
What are some symptoms of diseases?
Dizziness, pain, blurry vision
When body systems are not functioning properly and homeostasis is not being maintained?
Abnormal cell growth such as Atrophy, Hyperplasia, Metaplasia, Neoplasia
Define tumor (neoplasm)
A mass formed when abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth occurs
Define Benign tumors
Tumors that only grow in one place. They cannot spread or invade
Define Malignant tumors
Tumors also called cancer. They typically crowd out healthy cells and continues to grow
Define Immunity
The body’s ability to resist invaders and diseases they cause
What are the 2 types of defenses?
Physical and chemical
Define acquired immunity
Results when the body is exposed to an invader, but overcomes it
Name some acquired immunities
Natural, artificial, passive or active
