Feeding Relationships Flashcards
how is a community formed?
formed of the populations of all the species present in an ecosystem at a particular time
how do species in a community interact with each other and the physical environment?
- feeding on each other - this allows the nutrients to be recycled
- competition for resources e.g. food, mates, nesting sites
- using abiotic resources e.g. absorbing mineral ions from the soil and using water
what do the arrows show in a food chain?
the direction that energy and biomass moves from the species that is eaten to the animal that eats it
what are trophic levels?
the stages in a food chain
what is a producer?
the plant that feeds the primary consumer
what is the first animal on a food chain called?
primary consumer
what is the second animal on a food chain called?
secondary consumer
what is the third animal on a food chain called?
tertiary consumer
what is a decomposer?
an organism that breaks down dead organic material (can be seen in food chains)
